Eye-Opening Procedure May Erase Years From Your Face
Rapid Eye Lift Helps Open Droopy Eyes
LOS ANGELES -- Imagine erasing time in the blink of
an eye. A new procedure can help open droopy eyes in a matter of
minutes and without scars.
Usually we think of a brow-lift to give eyes that
wide open look, But for many people, it's not excess skin that makes
us look older -- it's what's underneath.
When Norma Jean Lingard looks in the mirror, she feels
a tired woman looks back.
"It was always small, but it even closed up more
as I got old," said Lingard of her aging eyes.
Santa Monica plastic surgeon Jonathan Hoenig told
her a brow-lift wasn't right for her.
"Her main problem is that that left upper lid
is droopy, not that she has extra skin," said Hoenig.
Norma Jean Lingard's upper and lower lids on her left
eye seemed closer together than her right eyelids because of the
muscle underneath the lid.
"As people get older they tend to have more of
a droopy eyelid just because the muscles stretch out," explained
Hoenig.
So Hoenig proposed an inside job -- tightening that
muscle from beneath the lid. It would take just a few minutes and
leave no scar.
"There's one stitch that's underneath and the
knots come out on the outside so it doesn't hurt the eye,"
said Hoenig.
To help Norma Jean decide, Hoenig gave her a glimpse
into her future with a simple ophthalmologist's trick.
"What we do is we put a drop of Neosynephrine
in the eye. Neosynephrine will stimulate this particular muscle,"
said Hoenig.
In a matter of minutes, the muscle tightens and the
lid lifts.
"My eye just opened up. It looks like a normal
eye again," said Lingard.
That was enough to convince Lingard she didn't need
a brow-lift.
One week later, Lingard was having her eye-opening
operation. With just local anesthesia she stayed awake for the entire
-- short -- procedure. The procedure took just nine minutes.
After a couple of weeks, when the swelling and bruising
went away, Lingrad said when she looked in the she was pleased with
the lady looking back.
" I love it. I'm very happy. I feel like a new
person," said Lingard.
While this was the perfect procedure for Lingard,
some people with tired-looking eyes may still need a brow lift.
