Q & A with Dr. Hoenig:
What can I do to soften scars after a lip lift?
"I had a permanent lip augmentation called a "lip lift" or lip advancement 2 years ago. I have scars around the border of my lips (top and bottom) from this. My scars feel very hard, thick and firm....obviously uncomfortable for me. (I know for a fact that I do not have hypertrophic scarring or anything of that nature.) Also, I have burning sensations...can scar tissue cause this?? Do you know any solutions that I could do to soften the scars?? I heard that cortisone injections could be of some help but how much can you inject into lip scars without causing atrophy??? Also, are there any lasers that would work??? If so, what is the best laser to use for this problem I am having??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!"
I have had very good success with injecting 5fu into the scars. This is FDA approved as a chemotherapy drug but I have found that in very small doses, it is effective in reducing scar tissue.
The burning sensations are from nerve irritation or possibly nerve damage. I don't know what can help that although some studies have shown that avoiding caffeine and taking vitamin e supplements can help.
