Q & A with Dr. Hoenig:

If steroid injections are given into ascar, it will cause atrophy?

"Someone told me that atrophy is deterrioration of muscle mass. The scar is not a muscle. So atrophy will not happen. Steroid shots soften the scar so that it does not feel firm. So, does that mean if steroid injections are given into the scar, it will not cause atrophy???"

Atrophy means wasting away. So you can have atrophy of different structures. Muscle atrophy occurs when the muscles are not used. Steroid injections are notorious for causing fat atrophy (not muscle atrophy) when injected into fatty tissues. If you inject only into the scar and not into the fat, then the steroid can help to lessen the body's reaction to build more scar tissue. I use a concoction of 5fu (a chemotherapy drug) with a little steroid in minute doses to treat unwanted scar formation.
